Friday, October 6th, 2006 05:01 pmOkay, this is a NEW one on ME!!! This is the craziest, nuttiest, most out there rationalization I have ever heard, and believe me, dearies, I've heard some good ones!

Okay, so this woman thinks school shootings wouldn't happen if the Harry Potter books weren't in libraries and schools. And she thinks they teach Wicca?? Has she even READ these books, or is she the woman who said flippantly, "Oh, I haven't read them; they're much too long!"
I seem to remember, several years ago, a woman on some discussion group on PBS or CBS declaring that she KNEW these books were promoting witchcraft, because they only celebrated the pagan versions of holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, but they never, ever even mentioned Thanksgiving. The moderator stared at her, then said, "That's because the books are set in Britain, and Thanksgiving is an AMERICAN holiday."
"Oh. Well, then," was all she could muster the strength to say.
So... I have to wonder, has this woman even read the books? Or maybe she just doesn't know anything about Wicca. Because there ain't nothin' Wiccan in the Harry Potter books. Do they celebrate the twelve sabbats in Harry Potter? No. Any mention of the Goddess? No. Any mention of casting circles, or celebrating the seasons or any of that? No... So... where the heck is she getting this, and exactly where in the books does it promote someone going to a school loaded up with rifles, handguns, ammunition, hand grenades and what have you and shooting up every person you can't stand or who dissed you, or made you unhappy, or just looked at you funny??
I'm getting quite testy about this. It's irritatin' the daylights out of me! Inaccuracy is one of Auntie's biggest pet peeves, that and judging something before you've really examined it, or researched it, or checked it out. This woman has very obviously not read the books, so... you betcha I'm hot under the collar.
