Busy Soccer Day

Yesterday was one of those all day soccer days.  Impossible Son's game was here at home at 10 am, and Impertinent Daughter's game was in Slaughter Creek at 2 pm.

The Impossible Son had an incredible game.  Normally, he plays forward, but yesterday, one of our goalies was out of town, so the Husbandly One put him in the net, and he did a phenomenal job.  Of course, the hyper-protective mom in me had Extreme Mom Moments when all those kids came barrelling down the field toward him, and he charged bravely forth to snag the ball, and all I could think was, "OMG!!  All those cleated feet by MY BABY'S HEAD!! AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

But I contained myself, and only squeaked at those moments.  Otherwise, I was on my feet, cheering myself hoarse.  It was GREAT.  He had some saves that were just so totally awesome!!  I had no idea, and I'M THE ONE WHO'S BEEN COACHING HIM!!!  *shakes head in wonder*  There were times he threw himself at that ball and wrapped himself around it like a little spider, then would leap up and kick out... and omg, it would just SOAR!!  Have I mentioned he's the smallest kid on the team?

They lost, 4 to 2, but OMG!!!  You should have seen him!!!

Then, the Impertinent Daughter's game was ALMOST a forfeit.  One of the player's mom called as we drove up to the field and said her daughter wasn't going to be able to play because Mom had to work.  I rather tartly said if she had called EARLIER, one of us would have been more than happy to pick up her daughter for the game and bring her back home.

"Oh.  I didn't think of that."

*grinds teeth*

Game time was at 2 pm.  At 1:58 pm, we had five players.  We play 8 on 8.  We were most fortunate that the previous game was running over, because at 2:04, 3 more players showed up.  So, Glacier Freeze (yes, that's the ID's team name) had to play with NO SUBS.  They play 30 minute halves.  That's 30 minutes of continuous running with no breaks for water.  And yes, they lost 4 to 1, because the other team had subs.   But our kids held their own, and boy, was it ever a fight!  The Impertinent Daughter worked her butt off, as did most of her team.  In fact, when Miss Priss was at Defense, she made this most excellent pass from the goal to midfield, where one of the forwards took it, ran it to the penalty box line, passed it to another forward, who shot it in for the goal.  It just ROCKED!!!  What made it so awesome was that the other team was taken so by surprise that they literally just flailed in response.  We got it close to the goal after that, but we were never able to catch them by surprise again, and our girls were getting so tired...

I have no voice today, thanks to all the cheering, shouting, and just going nuts.

We're going to have to have a parents meeting, though, to discuss just what went wrong on Saturday.  Meaning, parents who didn't call to ask for directions, or to let us know they weren't coming.  And the parent who completely tanked on snack detail.  Their daughter arrived with another parent, and therefore, no snacks, no water, no Gatorade...

The assistant coach and I departed for the grocery store to buy snacks and liquid, and missed most of the first half.  Man, that pisses me off.  And having parents not call us to tell us what's going on... it wasn't fair to our players to have to play with no subs.  Good thing they've been working on conditioning, or they'd have DIED out there!

Well, I need to get about my business.  It's Pagan Pride Day, and we're off to the local events.  Any of my f-listers in Austin might see me... I'll be the one with no voice and a big grin on my face, standing next to the guy with the goatee, wearing a battered UT baseball cap!
