In case I haven't mentioned how much I love this house...

I've discovered a good distraction from those pauses one gets in the middle of a writing frenzy, you know, when you're just flowing, your fingers working madly over the keyboard because the story is literally leaking from your fingertips... and then... you hit a speed bump. Maybe it's how you've worded something, or you can't quite get the concept you're working for across, it's just not quite right, and you need to step away from it and stop thinking about it. I've learned that the harder I try to think about something, the harder it is to think. If I'm trying to remember something, I stop and go do something completely different, and I'll remember it. Same with writing. If I stop working on it, walk away from the computer (or my notebook) and do something completely different, my subconscious will work away at it and by the time I get back, I've worked it out.
There is a basketball court in our backyard. Oh, nothing big, barely half a court, but it's big enough for a basket and a good game of one on one if you're in the mood for it. And it's perfect for going out and shooting hoops when you're stuck. I just get up, step out the bedroom door onto the back porch, cross the deck and pick up the ball and start dribbling and shooting. It helps, and boy, do I ever need the perspective sometimes. With the Impertinent Daughter and the Impossible Son around, I need all the perspective I can get!
I have to be careful, though. I have a very creaky knee, thanks to years of abuse in drum corps, and athletics, and it crunches when I walk (ewwwwww! cries Auntie's Friends). The Impertinent Daughter refuses to walk behind me on stairs, because she can hear my knee crunching and crackling when I walk, and goes into the shivering horrors. "Mama, stop walking! Let me up!" she wails. "I can't stand it!"
Hey, it's not all that great on my end, either. I get to hear it INTERNALLY!!
Anyway, the basketball court is great for writer's block, or just getting over those writing speed bumps we all hit from time to time. So's pulling weeds in the garden. Nothing like ripping up weeds to get things going again.
Yeah, I really like this house. It's a good house for a writer. And family.
