It's raining again...

Well, at least the Husbandly One was able to grill burgers for his hungry little family! HO's burgers are the best, and we love it when we can convince him to fire up the pit. He inherited it from my dad, so he doesn't really need much of an excuse to fire it up. My dad worked on oil rigs during the fifties and sixties (he's a World War II vet), and he and his buddies were sitting around the shop one afternoon with nothing to do. And a shipment of brand new, shiny oil drums had just come in, along with pipe and other fittings. Bad combination. They sat there, looking at those drums, and the pipes, and my dad said, "You know, those barrels kinda remind me of the pits my dad has at his restaurant, but his are bigger. But you know, that would be just the right size for a home barbecue pit."
They all got a gleam in their eye, and well, my dad got the only pit the crew at McCullough Tools managed to finish before they were caught by their bosses. And now, my husband has it. And it's still cooking strong!
We had planned to go to the fireworks show our town puts on every year. One of the nice things about this town is the fireworks show is a real humdinger. Nothing fancy, no canned music, but we have a group of folks who jump out of planes to kick things off, coming down in multicolored chutes, trailing smoke, banners, flags, you name it, and everyone cheers when they land safely. Then when it gets dark, the fireworks start, and I have to tell you, there are no bad seats. You can sit in City Park, right in the big middle of it, or go sit in the HEB parking lot, or at Kruez's Barbecue, or by the Ford dealership... you could sit in literally any spot in town, and have a good view of the fireworks. But not tonight. It was pouring down rain. I'm not complaining, believe me, though a couple of very disappointed little people here were. We are in the big middle of a drought (so what else is new?), so any rain we get is something to be happy about. My kids don't sing, "Rain, rain, go away" any more. We made up a new song when my daughter was little, and we were in the last drought cycle out here that lasted for two and a half years.
"Rain, rain come and stay,
Come and stay and play all day!"
It would have been nice to see fireworks, but... I'd rather have the rain!
