They peeked to make sure she was still asleep, and got busy with their preparations. It wasn’t going to be much, because they were in hiding, they were in the middle of the search, and it was too dangerous, really, to do anything, but they couldn’t just let another year go by without letting their girl know how they felt about her.

“Did you get the chocolate?” Ron asked quietly as he pulled the book out from the bottom of his knapsack.

“Yeah,” said Harry, pulling out the little silk bag of individually wrapped Honeyduke’s Finest Dark Chocolate Tidbits, the wizarding world’s version of Hershey’s Kisses. “And the Sugar Quills.” Hermione had such a weakness for Sugar Quills. “Did you get the card?”

Ron blushed. “Well… not exactly.”

“Not exactly?” Harry looked up. “Aw, Ron… did you chicken out?” It was hard to keep his voice down, as exasperated as he was. “Look, I had to go into that… that… place for the… you know… under thingies!” He shuddered at the memory.

Ron fought back a snort, remembering his own embarrassment. “I got something, but… not exactly a Valentine’s card. But… I knew she’d like it.” He pulled it out, and Harry stared at it, then grinned.

“You are absolutely brilliant sometimes, Ron,” he said, clapping the red-head on the shoulder. “All right, let’s get this wrapped and in place. And get the other things ready.”

Living as they were, basically on the go and out of a bag, as it were, it wasn’t easy to arrange surprises like this, but Ron and Harry, when they put their minds to it, could be as inventive and clever as anyone else. Especially when they had the help of many, many Weasleys.

The falling down shack had been reinforced inside magically, keeping out wind, rain, and anything else that might bother them. Thanks to Hermione’s ingenuity and perseverance in reading anything she could get her hands on, there were several non-descript charms both inside and out that disguised the fact that any magic was going on at all in the little shack, and made them invisible to hostile, and even friendly, eyes. This particular hunt for Rowena Ravenclaw’s glasses had taken them to a very out of the way place, which was the only reason Harry and Ron both felt they could risk this surprise for their friend. So, while she slept on behind the curtain they’d erected to give her some privacy, the two boys began arranging their surprise. A small box that had been tucked away in the bottom of Harry’s knapsack was brought out and enlarged, and from within, food that had been kept fresh and warm with stasis charms were lifted out and set on the rickety table Hermione had cleaned and reinforced only the previous day. Candles were set about in convenient places, and lit, and the gifts were arranged on the table just so. Then, biting his lip, Ron reached into his pocket and pulled out their last surprise. Harry nodded at the gleam of gold in Ron’s hand. They’d both split the costs of this particular item, getting it engraved, and having certain charms placed on it. Ron smiled, and together, they crept around the curtain where Hermione was curled into a ball, blankets pulled up tight over her shoulders, face nuzzled down into the pillows for warmth. Carefully, Ron laid a glittering chain across the book inches from her nose, where she’d be sure to see it, and stepped back. They tiptoed back around the curtain and sat at the table to wait for Hermione to wake up.

Her nose twitched. Something smelled delicious. She stirred. What was Molly cooking, and why was she so cold? She opened her eyes, wondering if Ginny had left the window open when a glitter caught her eye. She blinked to focus and found herself staring at a small gold heart hanging off the book she’d been reading last night, looking for something, anything, that could help in their search. Wonderingly, she reached to touch it, and picked it up, slowly sitting up and staring at it. As she woke up a bit more, she realized there were words engraved into it. She squinted. Our Girl.

There was a squeal from behind the curtain. Ron leaped to his feet, startled. “Hermione??”

She flew out from behind the curtain, still in the jeans and jumper she’d been wearing last night, her feet bare, staring at them with the locket clasped in her hands. “Oh! Oh, it’s lovely! It’s beautiful and… and…” her eyes went wide as she stared around the room. “Ron?? Harry?? What… how…?”

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Hermione,” they chorused, stepping away from the table so she could see the veritable feast spread out upon it. Her mouth fell open.

“Surprised?” said Harry, grinning.

“I think she’s actually speechless, Harry,” said Ron, struggling not to laugh. “Look at her! She can’t think of a word to say! Our Hermione can’t think of a word to say!”

“Oh… boys…” she said softly, her hands going to her mouth as she stared at the food, the candles, the tablecloth that had been spread on the table, the chairs, and the gifts. “Oh… how on earth…”

Harry smiled and took her hand, leading her to the table. “We know we’ve been dunderheads where Valentine’s Day is concerned, Hermione,” he said, nodding as Ron, pulled a chair out for her. “And we thought it was time we let you know how we felt about you.”

“Yeah,” said Ron, going red to the tips of his ears. “Because… you never know… and we love you, Hermione. We couldn’t do a thing without you.”

“We wouldn’t have made it this far without you,” said Harry earnestly. “We may not have always shown it, but we appreciate you, and we respect you.”

“You’ve been a far better friend than we deserve, sometimes,” said Ron, and he took her hand before dripping something cold and wet down the back of her neck. “That’s why we want to roll you in chocolate and wrap you in foil.”

“Our own little chocolate surprise,” said Harry, licking his lips. “I could take a bite right now!” He grasped her hand and bit her finger sharply…

…Hermione woke abruptly, looking up at Crookshanks as he bit her finger again. “Crookshanks! Whatever are you doing?” she whispered, and winced when something cold and wet dripped on her neck again. She looked up and saw the tent was leaking just above her sleeping bag. Grumbling, she started to move when a glint of gold caught her eye, and she found a gold heart shaped locket on a chain draped over her pillow. She sat up, and found a packet of Honeyduke’s Finest Dark Chocolate Tidbits, and another of Sugar Quills next to her pillow, as well as something tucked into an envelope which turned out to be a gift certificate for Flourish and Blott’s. Picking up the locket, she saw the words, “Our Girl” engraved upon it, and when she opened it, there was a picture of the three of them standing together in the courtyard at Hogwarts, autumn leaves falling around them. Three bright, happy faces leaning together for Colin Creevy’s camera. She looked up to see Ron and Harry sitting up in their sleeping bags, grinning at her.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Hermione,” said Ron, blushing to the tips of his ears.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Hermione,” said Harry happily. “Didn’t think we’d forget, did you?”

Hermione Granger held the locket in her hand, feeling the love and care put into it, along with a thread of magic, and smiled. “Thank you,” she said, wanting to laugh at her silly dream, and so glad, so happy to be with her best friends in the whole wide world, no matter what they were doing. “Thank you both so much. I love you, both of you, you know that?”

“Cheers, Hermione,” said Harry, his cheeks bright red, and his eyes suspiciously bright.

Ron’s eyes bulged for a moment, then he laughed softly. “Yeah, guess you wouldn’t have stuck with us this long if you didn’t.”

“And don’t you forget it!” she retorted, though she knew what he meant.

“Never,” said Ron, reaching out to take one of her hands in his big one.

“Never,” said Harry, his own hand, smaller than Ron’s but bigger than hers, clasping the two hands tightly.

“Never,” she said, laughing.
