The Anal Speller
Monday, February 26th, 2007 09:02 amOkay, I have read yet a THIRD piece of fiction that has made this mistake, and it's driving me nuts. All right, people, here is a lesson from Auntie!
A BROOCH is an ornamental pin with a clasp for wearing on the breast or a shoulder. It can be pronounced the way it looks, with the "oo" sound, or with the 'short o" sound.
BROACH means (1) to mention or suggest for the first time; introduce (2) to pierce so as to withdraw a liquid.
Or in mechanical terms (1) a pointed tapering tool for boring; a reamer (2) a spit for roasting.
Is everyone clear on this? *looks over to see if there are any raised hands* I don't normally do this, but please!! It was like biting on a sore tooth!!
*crawls back to huddle over keyboard and write*
