I have this habit. It began when the Impertinent Daughter started first grade, and was going to school for the first time. (I home-schooled her for kindergarten) To help her feel more at home, and let her know I was thinking about her, I would write little notes and tuck them into her lunchbox. Nothing major, just things like, "Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide!" or "Soccer practice today, YAY!" And it always had a little smile with a heart over it, and was signed, "love, Mama." Hey, I'm a mom, it's what we do!
Well, she's sort of outgrown this, though from time to time she'll ask for a note... just because. I've written notes for the Impossible Son, but since he's pre-reading, I can't get too elaborate. So... last week, running out of ideas, I decided to do little sketches. The first one was... Harry Potter. It wasn't anything major, just a quick sketch of his head and shoulders, the glasses, the messy hair, and the scar. Mr. Manzie loved it, though I didn't realize it at first. When I asked him about it, he shrugged and said, "sure, I liked it. Can I go play now?"
The next one was Ron, of course, then Hermione, then Professor Dumbledore, and finally, Hagrid. I didn't realize how much he truly liked those drawings until one, I found them squirreled away under his pillow, every single one of them! And two, he was sitting in bed with the Husbandly One, enthusiastically describing them to his papa, and then he said, "Mama, next, you have to draw Perfesser Migongallagall (which is how he says McGonagall), and then Malfoy... and don't forget Crabbe and Goyle... then Flickwit... and... Nape... and... oh, I'll think of more later, but you gotta draw 'em, Mama, so I can show them to all my friends!"
Well... so all those years in graphic design aren't a complete waste!
Guess I'll be sketching out Professor McGonagall in the morning. Funny how I seem to do my best work while not really awake!
