We're leaving this afternoon for the first leg of our trip to Washington D.C. The Impertinent Daughter is alternately excited... and terrified. "What if they don't like me? What if I don't like them? What if I get scared or have a nightmare? What if I can't wake up in time? What if the plane crashes? What if I get lost?"
I have patiently answered each question, and let her talk it out.
"Well, you're going to this thing to learn diplomacy and tact. So, it seems to me like a good opportunity to change their minds."
"Well, again, diplomacy and tact. It's perfectly okay to not like someone. Just use your good manners and be polite, while thinking evil things in your head and plotting ways to eliminate them from the species, dear."
"Well, you've been scared and had nightmares before, and handled it without having either me or Papa be there. You can do it again. If not, you've got your cell phone. Just call us, even if it's in the middle of the night. I'll leave my phone on for you."
"You'll wake up, don't worry. If you get three girls together in a room, it's a certain guarantee that ONE of them is going to be a Bright, Cheerful, Getting Up At an Ungodly Hour of the Morning type person."
"Hmmm... that's always a possibility. But you know, we'll all be sitting together. Maybe we could all hold hands and sing something as we go down... like Lemme go oooooon, like a blister in the sun, let me go o-o-on... Big hands I know you're the one!!" That one got a laugh.
"If you get lost, you've got your cell phone. Stay calm, call the hotel or your chaperone, or hell, call me! I'll keep you calm till you get found, okay?"
Finally, after dealing with nerves, all sorts of what-if? situations that made me want to drive a fork through my brain, my brain, evidently trying to save itself from being impaled, gave me a whack and made me realize, DUH!!!
So, I went and found this necklace a great-aunt had given me, one of the few I really liked (she was a journalist, and a really good one, too!). It was silver, with three little heart shaped lockets on it. Calling THO and Mr. Impossible, I made sure she was watching and opened the hearts. First, the Impossible Son placed a kiss in one heart and whispered, "I love you, Sis." I closed it quickly. Then THO did the same thing, and that one was snapped shut. Then I kissed the third one and whispered, "I love you and I'm with you," and shut that one, too. She was watching us with shining eyes, and when I put the chain around her neck... instant calmness.
Why didn't I think of that before???
Packing Mode, that's why. Well, I must return to the salt mines. I will try to post during our week, and have pictures. Auntie's off adventuring!!
